What is an ‘Architect’?

The term ‘architect’ can only be used by someone who has received the education, training and have the experience required to become an architect and who are registered with the ARB. If the term ‘architect’ is used, it means that members of the public can verify with the ARB that they are dealing with a genuine and qualified professional. This is also to ensure the public are not deliberately misled by people who are naming themselves something they are not.

Architects are proud of their title and do not wish to see their title used to mislead people or in a way in which it could harm their professional reputation.

An architect who is a member of the RIBA will receive professional training and support, the RIBA sets standards for the education of architects in the UK and overseas. Membership of the RIBA is acknowledged all over the world as a symbol of professional excellence. RIBA is a membership organisation and does not held jurisdiction of the title ‘Architect’.

Architects work within the construction industry and deal with new build designs, extensions or changes to existing buildings or advise people when restoring and conserving old, period properties. Architects can be involved with the design of the surrounding landscape and spaces; they can work on individual constructions or on large development schemes.
To ensure the projected designs meet the needs of the customer and are functional, safe and economical, Architects work together with the client.

Architects can start developing ideas with the client from the early stages of a building project which includes establishing budgets, assessing the impact within the local environment and the needs of the building and its users. Architects also work with the site selection and work closely with the builders on site to ensure the work is carried out to specific standards and meets the legal requirements.
